Greenville County Schools shortens COVID-19 quarantine guidelines, per CDC, DHEC – WYFF4 Greenville

Greenville County Schools on Thursday announced it’s changing the district’s protocols for quarantine resulting after COVID-19 exposure (close contact) based on updated guidance from the CDC and DHEC.The CDC announced Thursday that about 99% of positive cases develop within 10 days of exposure. As a result, starting tomorrow and following this new guidance, the quarantine period for GCS students identified as “close contacts” will be reduced from 14 days to 10, officials said. For four additional days, these individuals will be expected to carefully monitor for symptoms, vigilantly socially distance, and wear a mask whenever social distancing is not possible, per CDC and DHEC guidance. Due to limited staff to manage this system and the number of students impacted, district officials said they cannot immediately revise the quarantine period for students already in quarantine.The district said it will work next week to apply these guidelines retroactively.The CDC also issued additional guidance that could further shorten the quarantine period to seven days when combined with a negative test result between the fifth and seventh day. Due to the increased risk of spread and the complexity of communicating and managing a more complicated systems of testing, monitoring, and verifying test results, GCS said the district has decided not to utilize this option at this time.Individuals who are unable to wear a mask will not be able to utilize the shortened quarantine option, officials said
